Danish Listeria Outbreak Linked to Pork Sausage
An outbreak of Listeria that has so far claimed 12 lives in Denmark is thought to have been caused by contaminated pork sausages. The Danish Ministry of Food Agriculture and Fisheries said the source of the outbreak has been traced to a type of rolled sausage called rullepølse manufactured at the Jørn A. Rullepølser A/S plant in Hedehusene, 30 km west of Copenhagen.
Company director Palle Andersen said; “For us it is incomprehensible that our products still contain listeria bacteria. It is even more difficult to relate to the fact that people became sick or died as a consequence of it.” The plant has been closed and all suspect food withdrawn from sale.
The National Serum Institute in Copenhagen say that 20 cases of Listeria have been diagnosed since September 2013 with 15 of them coming in the past three months. The infected patients consist of 11 women and nine men between the ages of 43 and 89. There have been 12 fatalities amongst the cases although it has not been confirmed that listeriosis was the main cause of death as some of the patients were already seriously ill. Authorities are now trying to ascertain whether any of the suspect products were exported outside Denmark.
