noiseElmbridge Borough Council’s Environmental Services Team were rewarded for their innovative work on noise nuisance at the recent John Connell Awards held by the Noise Abatement Society.

The awards, nicknamed the ‘noise Oscars’, recognise organisations and individuals for their outstanding efforts to reduce the impact of noise nuisance and pioneer practical and innovative solutions to noise pollution. Five local authorities (Milton Keynes, Cornwall, Maidstone, Medway and Elmbridge) were nominated for their work this year.

During the summer months Elmbridge teamed up with colleagues at Surrey Police to run a joint service dealing with noise, alcohol and taxi licensing issues. Part of Elmbridge’s innovative approach includes the use of a new noise app developed by RH Environmental. Available in Apple and Android formats, the app gives service users the ability to instantly record noise disturbances while logging all the information necessary to take cases forward.

Councillor Glen Dearlove, the council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, has been fully behind the service’s use of new technology. “I am absolutely delighted that we received such a distinguished award, which recognises the council’s commitment to innovation and excellence in customer service,” he said. “Residents and local businesses can feel reassured that if they have a problem with noise, we have a comprehensive and award-winning service working with the police to deal with it.”
